Hello everyone! Here’s a little bit about me…I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2001. After suffering through mystery ailments for years, my body had finally starting upping the ante, into Digestive issues, Osteopenia, Anemia and some muscular/neurological issues. Being diagnosed was a relief, despite the initial shock of the gluten-free diet. Back then, a lot of the shopping for gluten free groceries was done through the internet. While that’s still the case for some things, now it seems like gf products are exploding into the marketplace, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier!

The Nature’s Harvest natural food store in Willow Grove, PA, has a really nice selection of gf flours, and other products. A few days ago I was browsing their shelves, when I spotted a brand I had never seen before. In the left top corner it said Sunstart Quality Bakers, with the brand name of FreeFrom just underneath. There were 2-3 flavors to choose from, and I picked their Chocolate Wrapped Golden Crunch one, because I’m partial to chocolate.

The description on the box says, “Delicious crispy cookies wrapped in the finest chocolate. Naturally!” With the photo of the product blown up on the box, they looked pretty chocolaty, and I thought they would have a nice thick chocolate layer ala Keebler. Instead, when I opened the box, it turns out the chocolate is more like a suggestion, and you can see the cookie part showing through it in places. They’re a nice size though; circular and about two and a half inches across.

When I bit into one, I discovered a texture that’s dry and crumbly, but holds together well. It’s more like shortbread, and when I read the back I discovered why. Turns out that they’re imported from Northern Ireland, and are also egg-free. They have coconut as one of the ingredients, but it isn’t too intrusive, and the overall taste reminds me of a caramel-free Girl Scout Samoa. The suggested serving size is only one cookie, but at only 85 calories and 5 grams of fat per cookie, I didn’t feel too guilty about deciding to eat two!

Their website is www.sunstartusa.com, if you’d like to see if any of their products are carried in your area.
