Well, so was I when I crossed paths with Herr’s Popped Chips . Each 1 oz serving is only 100 calories and less than 2 grams of fat. Those numbers are even more impressive when you consider how lightweight these chips actually are. A 1 oz serving can fill a nice sized bowl. Even though these chips are very lightweight and low calorie, I found eating a few chips was enough to quench my cravings for a salty, crunchy snack. So if you are like me you won’t really need to eat a whole 1 oz serving.

Of course low calorie does not always mean healthy. Herr’s Popped Chips are not as healthy as a bowl full of fruits or veggies. But if you looking for a snack that tastes indulgent without the consequence, then this crunchy treat will do the trick.

Similarly, a gluten-free label does not always mean the product is completely safe for those diagnosed with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. After reviewing Herr’s Allergy Information, which you can read in full on Herr’s official web site www.herrs.com, I discovered that though the ingredients are fully gluten-free Herr’s does not have designated processing lines for their GF products. As a result there is a small possibility for cross-contamination. Herr’s urges individuals who are highly sensitive to take this into consideration before using their products.

[This product was reviewed by Annsley Klehr, NFCA volunteer and Owner of Gluten Freedoms, LLC, a gluten-free life coaching and consulting company.]

Have you been having cravings for potato chips, but aren’t sure if they’re cross-contaminated? If so, your days of worrying are over! Good Health Natural Foods, Inc. has come out with several lines of chips that have been tested, certified gluten-free, and are produced in a gluten-free facility. Once I heard about these new chips on the market, I had to get my hands on them.

Francois Bogrand, a French ex-patriot who had emigrated to the U.S., founded Good Health Natural Foods, Inc. in 1992. Bogrand was initially interested in bringing French food products to the States, and in doing so, he realized the health food market industry had room for exploration. In 2000, Good Health Natural Foods introduced their first potato chip cooked solely in olive oil, and following that they released a body care line. In 2004, they began introducing chips cooked in avocado oil. Milestone Partners, a Philadelphia-based group, bought the company in 2004 and continues to maintain its integrity in the health food industry.

I can’t say enough about how well their website is organized and was impressed with its fully detailed information about allergens, nutrition, and ingredients. It made me feel comfortable sampling and reviewing their products. Of their line of 12 gluten-free products, eight of them are gluten-free and manufactured in a gluten-free facility, and four do not contain gluten ingredients, but have the potential for cross-contamination. I sampled three of their products, which are all processed in gluten-free and nut-free facilities – Avocado Oil Potato Chips Sea Salt, Glories Sweet Potato Chips Original and Avocado Oil Potato Chips Barcelona Barbecue.

I got a group of gluten-eating friends together to do a bit of sampling. I would say that of the three, the top choice was the Avocado Oil Potato Chips with Sea Salt. We agreed that the crunch was super satisfying and the medium thickness of the chips allowed them to hold together with every bite. We couldn’t just stop eating after one chip and proceeded to devour the bag. I personally liked that they were a bit oily, especially since I knew the oil was such a healthy one; it added a bit of authenticity. The chips just had that all-American potato chip flavor. According to Good Health Natural Foods website, these chips contain 30% less fat than traditionally cooked chips.

We found multiple uses for the Avocado Oil Potato Chips. We thought you might try them:

Dipped in a sour cream and onion dip or in a gluten-free ranch dressing (though some of us felt they were just really good on their own)

Crushed and use to bread fish

Added to a gluten-free sandwich

Used instead of croutons on a salad

Just eaten alongside a hearty gluten-free sandwich

The next chips we tasted were Glories Sweet Potato Original, which certainly have a lot going for them. They have no trans fats, are low sodium, GMO free, and gluten-free. Upon first bite, we found them not greasy, with a pleasantly sweet, fresh, healthy taste to them (and not a salty one). The crunch to these chips was quite hearty. They grew on us as we ate them, and by the time we were done, so were the chips!

As we continued to eat the bag, we noticed the chips in the bottom were quite a bit saltier, so it appeared as though the seasoning was not evenly distributed. We recommend gently shaking the bag before consumption. We also thought they might go well dipped in hummus.

The last chip we tasted was the Avocado Oil Potato Chip, Barcelona Barbecue style. We thought these to have the best crunch of the lot and had a heavy garlicky flavor, which is great if you like garlic. We found the chips with the most flavor to reside in the bottom of the bag, so we would again recommend gently shaking them up before eating. Though we still ate them all, the consensus was that these chips needed a bit more spice to give them a true BBQ kick.

All in all, we still enjoyed our experience, and I was tickled pink to find gluten-free chips that I could eat and keep eating! I want to thank the team at Good Health Natural Foods, Inc. for sending me their samples and allowing me to review their products. I can’t wait to go eat my gluten-free sandwich and chips now!

“Sprouted chips” doesn’t sound the most appealing from the outset, but Way Better Snacks are actually way better for you and way better tasting than your standard snack options. And they’re certified gluten-free.

The tortilla chips, which come in six flavors, are made using a process known as “sprouting.” Basically, they let the seeds germinate before they add them to the chip. The sprouted chia seeds, broccoli seeds, quinoa seeds, etc. add nutritional benefits like more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Sprouting also promotes good digestion and nutrient absorption. You can learn more about it on the company’s website: Sprouting: The Difference.

With all those nutrients, you’d wonder if some flavor would be compromised. Not the case. These chips are addictively good, and the perfect size and shape for dipping (they’re just as good solo, too).

Here’s the rundown:

Multi-Grain: These are the closest to a standard tortilla chip. Salty, cruchy and hearty without having an overwhelming flavor one way or the other. Great for taco dip.

Sweeet Potato (Yes, that’s three e’s): These were my favorite of the lot. I’ve had sweet potato chips before that tasted barely like sweet potatoes, but these left no questions asked. A nice dusting of salt makes them perfectly snackable. I’ll be honest – I ate them straight out of the bag. No dips or pairings needed.

Sweet Chili: This flavor is for the spice fans. There is a good bit of heat – the kind that tickles your throat as you continue to munch. Have a glass of water handy so you can enjoy these without interruption.

Black Bean: I don’t know what it is about black beans that make them tasty so meaty, but these chips fall along that line. They’re surprisingly filling, yet still delicious. Use them to finish off a bowl of turkey or vegetarian chili.

Unbeatable Blues: These are comparable to blue corn tortilla chips currently on shelves. They’re versatile enough for many dips or dishes, but look more intriguing than the classic yellow or white corn chip.

Naked Blues: These are a no-salt version of the Unbeatable Blues. Personally, I missed the salt. The chips tasted a little drab, but nothing that fresh guacamole or fruit salsa couldn’t liven up. If you’re monitoring your salt intake, this is a great option. If not, the other flavors are worth the extra sodium.

Way Better Snacks are available in grocery stores across the country, including Wegmans and Fairway. They will be available in Whole Foods Market starting in January. You can also order them online.

But then that is probably obvious from my previous reviews of their products (you can check those out here and here). So when I discovered new flavors of Food Should Taste Good chips setting on the grocery store shelf I was pleasantly surprised. The new Jalapeno and Cheddar flavor immediately caught my eye and quickly found its way into my cart and heart. Like all of FSTG products the new flavors are built on a solid and crunchy foundation of natural and high quality ingredients. Similar to the Jalapeno flavor, the new Jalapeno and Cheddar flavor brings on the heat with spicy peppers. The addition of white cheddar adds a smooth and almost smoky flavor that complements the heat from the jalapeno and red pepper deliciously. Both flavors work well together on the FSTG’s signature crunchy stone ground corn chip. In addition to the Jalapeno with Cheddar flavor, keep your eyes out for the other new gluten-free products from Food Should Taste Good including Hatch Chile, Hemp, and White Cheddar flavors.

Parents may have different concerns depending on their child’s dietary needs, but one thing they all fear is the onslaught of sugar on Halloween night. Gluten-free or not, Halloween candy yields little nutritional value, and having kids haul a pillowcase full of chocolate, taffies and bubblegum into the house is an invitation for overindulging.

It may be tough to peel your child away from their favorite gluten-free candy, but by offering some creative and healthy Halloween treats, you can help your child maintain a balanced and nutritious diet. Here are some ideas:

Set a good example

It’s hard to tell your child to take it easy on the candy when you’re handing out the sweet stuff. Opt for mini bags of gluten-free snacks like Froose Gummies, which offer a good source of fiber, or Kay’s Naturals, which are packed with protein. Bags of microwave popcorn are another healthy and gluten-free option (just don’t buy the ones loaded with butter!)

You can also go the non-food route and hand out things like glow sticks or festive erasers, as one parent noted.

Play with your food

You eat with your eyes first, so make it a festive scene. Try making a Taco Dip Dragon or Haunted Forest Platter to entice your child with some real food. Remember to make the necessary swaps to ensure it’s gluten-free. (Peel a zucchini into strips to replace the spaghetti!).

Pump up dessert

Give brownies a healthy boost by making them with pumpkin puree. Best of all, you can still use a gluten-free box mix! Get the recipe for Gluten-Free Pumpkin Brownies. If you’re not a fan of pumpkin, try mixing in applesauce or black beans instead.

Repurpose your sweets

Candy doesn’t have to be enjoyed straight out of the wrapper. Crumble a peanut butter cup over low fat yogurt, or melt a chocolate bar and drizzle it over some sliced apples. The kids will still be eating sweets, but they’ll be part of a “better for you” treat. Plus, it’s a chance for your gluten-free child to help in the kitchen.

Ultimately, the packages are like giant, gluten-free goodie bags. There’s a little taste of everything, and each delivery is different. The packages also strike a nice balance between snacks you can immediately tear into and coupons you can save for later. With food prices on the rise, those discounts can cut down the sticker shock we’ve all been experiencing at the grocery store.

[This post was written by NFCA Communications intern Rachel.]

This summer, you can snack for a porpoise. Literally. Whale Tails Tortilla Chips – a gluten-free snack option that comes in the shape of a whale’s tail – has introduced two new flavors: Hawaiian Barbeque with sun-ripened mango and Blue Corn infused with Chia, and they all support our aquatic friends.

“These new flavors continue the tradition of using only natural, organic, gluten-free, non-GMO ingredients to fulfill the consumer’s quest for delicious, healthy snacks,” said Ric Kraszewski, Vice President of Sales for Whale Tails Tortilla Chips. He went on to call the chips “habit-forming,” and I’m sure many snack fans could relate.

According to the press release, “The exciting new Hawaiian Barbeque flavor combines hints of savory island barbeque with a trace of tropical sun-ripened mango and a splash of lime, creating just the right amount of zest to satisfy the palette.” It sounds like they may be too hard to resist.

The Blue Corn chips also offer a healthy twist. As the release noted, “Chia contains higher amounts of omega-3 than any other vegetarian source, all essential amino acids, and five times more calcium than milk.”

To round it all out, enjoying these chips can even contribute to a better planet. A portion of every bag purchased is donated to the Wyland Foundation, which is dedicated to protecting the world’s waterways and marine life.

I haven’t tried the chips yet, but I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled. The chips are sold at Whole Food stores in Southern and Northern California, many aquariums and specialty stores, and online.

Among those were Blue Diamond’s Baked Nut Chips, a gluten-free item now sold at natural food stores and major grocery chains.

Like many of you, I’ve snacked on plenty of Blue Diamond’s Nut Thins, so I wondered how different this new “chip” would be. Let’s take a look:

Packaging: From the outset, you can tell these chips are a bit different from their gluten-free cracker cousins. Nut Chips come in a bag, not a box, and while they’ve still got the familiar diamond motif, there’s an additional image on the bag: a block of cheese, a bowl of dip, or a barrel of salt, depending on the flavor. If you ask me, that bumps up the expectation for a taste explosion inside.

Taste: The first flavor I tried was Sour Cream and Chive. As soon as the chip hit my tongue – boom – I could taste the salty and oniony essence of the beloved party dip. The texture was very similar to Nut Thins, but that extra pump of flavor sets Nut Chips apart. Next up was Nacho. It has just enough cheesy flavor to satisfy without tipping into that “so cheesy it’s fake” danger zone. Yes, my fingers were speckled orange after a few bites, but nothing a napkin couldn’t handle. Finally, there was the unassuming Sea Salt. Oh yes, these will do quite well crumbled on tilapia or dipped whole into hummus. Salty, but plain enough to pair with any flavorful dish.

Utility: As an avid fan of dips, I’ve mastered the ability to transport maximum amounts of salsa, guacamole, goat cheese, etc., on a chip with minimum spills or breaks. But a master is only as good as her tools. Fortunately, these new Nut Chips are sturdy enough to handle heavy dips, while their triangular shape makes it easy to burrow in there without getting my hands all sloppy. Nut Thins still dominate for snacks involving hard cheeses or mini sliders. But now, when it comes to snacking without the use of cheese knives or spreaders, Nut Chips have it in the bag.

The sample stations get me every time. Whether I’m at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, I can’t help but crane my neck when I see shoppers gathered around for tastings. When you’re gluten-free, pawing at a communal bowl isn’t a smart idea, but fortunately, many sample stations now serve their bites in individual cups or bags to keep cross-contamination (not to mention, germs) at bay. Now the tough part is keeping an eye out for the gluten-free goods.

Which brings me to Brad’s Raw Chips. A few months ago, I was meandering through Whole Foods when I came upon a sampling station for Brad’s Raw Kale Chips. More importantly, I spotted “Gluten-Free” on the banner promoting the product. Naturally, I had to try it.

I scooped up a small cup of the Nasty Hot flavor and pocked a business card. Could be a great local contact, I thought. But first, the taste test. I popped a kale chip in my mouth and crunched. Flavor explosion. It was light and airy, but packed a punch of salt and spice. I tend to boast about my tolerance for hot foods, but this was intense. When I left the store 30 minutes later, I could still feel the tingle on my lips. That being said, I wanted more.

Brad must have read my mind. A week or two later, I received an email from the company, asking if we’d like samples of their product line.

In addition to kale, Brad’s Raw Chips showcase other fresh vegetables, including Sweet Potato, Red Bell Pepper and Beet – all raw, vegan and gluten-free. Now, when you hear “raw,” don’t think “cold and wet.” The chips are dehydrated at a very low temperature, which produces dry, cracker-like consistency (though the kale chips are more delicate), perfect for dipping or snacking.

As for taste, we found the bare chips to be a bit lacking. The Sweet Potato and Beet chips, for example, were a filling, nutritious snack, but could have used some salt or spice. The flavored chips – Indian and Cheddar in particular – had a wonderful zing but still had the raw, almost woody base we were looking for.

Amid all the options, we kept going back to the Kale Chips. Something about the way the leaves crinkled, or how the sea salt hid in its crevices, won our tastebuds over. The fact that kale is a super veggie certainly didn’t hurt, either.

Brad’s Raw Chips are sold in grocery stores and markets on the East Coast and in Iowa, but you can also score them by ordering online. Visit www.BradsRawChips.com.
