New Year’s Eve Gluten-Free Libations

What alcoholic drinks are safe and unsafe to consume can be a confusing subject for celiacs. In case you choose to ring in the new year with a toast here are a few clarifications.

Distilled alcoholic beverages including rum, gin, whiskey and vodka are considered gluten-free because gluten does not survive the distillation process. If you rather play it safe and would prefer to avoid alcohol derived from grains then Tequila, White Rum, and Vodka when it is made from potatoes are all safe choices. It is important to be aware of what you are drinking. This is especially true of cocktails which may be made with mixers and other ingredients that are not gluten-free. As always, reading labels and asking questions when someone else is making your drink is an important step in avoiding hidden gluten. Wine and Champagne also make excellent and safe choices when toasting in the New Year since they are made from grapes.

If you prefer beer then you are in luck since there are some great gluten-free options available. Many of them have been reviewed here on Gluten-free Hot Products. Gluten-free beer options include: Redbridge distributed by Anheuser Busch, Bard’s Tale, Green’s Gluten Free Beers and Crispin Hard Cider.

From all of us at Gluten-free Hot Products,
Happy New Years!

[Almost one year ago, Nancy and I visited a new shop known as Food For All Market. It was quaint, adorable and packed with gluten-free and food allergy-friendly products. Since then, we've ordered their gluten-free cupcakes for birthday parties at the office, and the shop even hosted a few celiac support group meetings.

Today, the market is celebrating it's 1-year anniversary. In honor of the milestone, Food For All Market fan Rachel Borofsky shared how this little shop made a big difference.

P.S. If you're in the Philadelphia area, they're celebrating today and tomorrow with free gluten-free samples. See the details.]

Food For All Market

Like many people with food allergies or intolerances, I struggle to find a place to rest my weary label-reading bones. A few bad experiences with tomato bisque have taught me to inquire about the ingredients in my order every time I eat out. I often wondered if a place existed where I could sit down and enjoy a sandwich on gluten-free bread, or a cup of soup made entirely from scratch. Fortunately, I’ve found such a place.

Food For All Market, located in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, provides a sanctuary for food allergy sufferers. Chef and owner Amy Kunkle came up with the concept after experiencing first hand the hardships food allergy suffers experience. Her three children were diagnosed with multiple food allergies, causing her to find alternatives to everyday meals. It was through this experience that sparked her inspiration for the store.

In the market, you will find a grocery section and also a section dedicated to freshly prepared foods. The market’s grocery shelves are stocked with a wide variety of allergy-sensitive items. Here you can find products such as gluten-free pasta imported from Italy, various gluten-free breads, and much, much more.

Despite having these rare grocery gems in the market, it’s the made-from-scratch meals that deserve the most attention. Everything is made fresh from local and organic fare, when available. Their soup, salad and sandwich menu items are available daily and made fresh on premise.

There are also ready to go items in their prepared food section such as their Quinoa of the Day, Acorn Squash Risotto, and Beet Salad, just to name a few. Last but not least, they have freshly baked gluten-free and dairy-free deserts, such as black bean brownies, chocolate chip banana bread and biscotti.

Food For All Market provides a haven where people with food allergies or intolerances can ease our minds and indulge our senses in the delicious allergy-friendly fare.

March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day, and whether you are Irish or not, odds are you are going to be exposed to the celebration. So I decided it might be nice to post some resources to help with having a happy and healthy gluten-free St. Patty’s Day.

Food:

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) has gathered some great recipes perfect for a St. Patrick’s Day feast. You can find them, along with other seasonal dishes in the NFCA’s Seasonal Gluten-Free Recipe Box on CeliacCentral.org.

Recipes include:

Corned Beef Cooked in Gluten-Free Beer

Onion and Quinoa Soup

Gluten-Free Irish Soda Bread

Additional recipes can also be found on About.com. Visit their Celiac Diet Section for a guide on celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day with gluten-free food.

Drink:

A few of the recipes listed above will call for gluten-free beer. A good gluten-free beer may also come in handy if you decide to have a green beer safe for someone on celiac diet. Fortunately, there are some great tasting options available.

Among the growing options of gluten-free beer is Redbridge Beer and Bard’s Tale Beer. I’ve tried both and either will fit into a gluten-free St. Patrick’s Day perfectly. Of course, hard cider is always an option, and one that’s naturally gluten-free.

Whether you stay inside and celebrate with friends or family, or if you go out, have a safe and happy gluten-free St. Patrick’s Day!
