A few weeks ago, I took a day off. What I thought would be a quick little project turned into a full day spent recapping my conversation with my daughter Molly when she made her first Vitacost order. We Skyped while placing the order, which was quite fun for me! Unfortunately, our video recording didn’t turn out as I hoped it would, so I recreated the experience with a screenshot and a few minutes of audio from our shopping experience – just in case you’re interested.
For us, Vitacost is practically a miracle. Molly was diagnosed with celiac disease when she was 16. She is now a junior at Bard College, where she lives on campus, but has medical exemption from the meal plan. While her campus is absolutely beautiful, it is also quite rural, so without a car, it makes shopping difficult. Each week or so, Molly takes the shuttle into town, where she shops at a local supermarket. She is lucky that they have a great gluten-free section, but the trip is still a production and the selection is finite.
Enter Vitacost. One of NFCA’s newest partners, Vitacost has an amazing selection of gluten-free, organic and natural foods, not to mention probiotics, supplements, personal care items and eco-friendly cleaning products. How cool.
But the best thing about Vitacost is not the vast selection, the ease of ordering from your dorm room, or even the products arriving at your door. The best thing about Vitacost are the prices.
For a little less than an hour, Molly and I were able to shop together, create a wishlist that I am now able to refer to over and over again, and I was able to purchase food for her that will be shipped to her door at no extra cost (for orders over $49).
Molly has a sweet tooth, and Vitacost was certainly able to accommodate that with an extensive selection of gluten-free baking mixes and ingredients. But they also had dry goods of all kinds, including most of the staples that Molly relies on for her mostly vegetarian diet. For only $50, we were able to get:
The website has lots of cool features, including the ability to shop by RECIPE!
The products arrived in less than a week, and the process of re-ordering took only about 5 minutes. I also discovered that for items she purchases regularly, Vitacost’s “Set and Save” feature pushes through an auto order that saves me even more time, not to mention an extra 10%.
By adding another $75, we were able to order organic shampoo and laundry detergent, 12 boxes of gluten-free instant noodles (so she can be a regular college student!), four boxes of her favorite pasta, two cases of Larabars, a 60-day supply of probiotics and several other items. I had a great day listening to Molly’s excitement, hearing about her successful gluten-free pot pie that she shared with her suite-mates and learning how I can make it easier for her to cook three meals a day, while maintaining a full academic schedule, a work-study job and two EMS shifts per week.
Consider me a Vitacost groupie!
