The other day, I received four packets of Cocomama Quinoa Cereal in the mail. I was excited to try them out for Gluten-Free Hot Products, since I have never had quinoa before. Kristin Voorhees and Cheryl McEvoy of NFCA are pretty big quinoa fans, so they gave the cereal a try, too.
I tried the Honey Almond Quinoa Cereal while Cheryl had the Wild Blueberry and Kristin went for the Orange Cranberry. You can eat the cereal cold or hot, so I tried a spoonful cold and microwaved the rest for 20 seconds. All three of us were surprised to find that we liked the quinoa better at room temperature than we did hot. I thought the flavor was a little on the bland side, but it can be easily enhanced with a few banana slices or other fruit of your choice.
Cheryl was pretty pleased with her choice of the Wild Blueberry. With a distinct purple color, it certainly looked the part! She was happy with the nice soft texture of the quinoa, noting that it wasn’t gritty or grainy at all. Always thinking of different ways to add some flair to her food, Cheryl thinks this will be a great fix for those blueberry crisp cravings- heat, top with a little ice cream or whipped cream and enjoy!
Kristin had a similar opinion of the Orange Cranberry as Cheryl, and she suggested adding some nuts to give it a bit more flavor and crunch.
One thing I really loved about the cereal is that it comes in convenient single-serve packets. Since I won’t eat breakfast before I’ve had my coffee, I keep a stash of breakfast cereal in my desk at the office. I could see the Cocomama cereal being perfect for people like me who eat breakfast at the office or who need something easy to take with them on the go. With no need to heat, this is perfect for students in a hurry or keeping on hand “just in case.” In light of Hurricane Sandy and with emergency preparedness still top of mind, I think this would also be a great addition to your emergency gluten-free food kit.
