My definition of a good time on a Friday night tends to differ from other 23 year olds. It doesn’t include fresh makeup, going to a bar, and staying out late. Instead, I like to put my sweats on, grab a gluten-free snack, and watch the Friday night lineup on ABC. First up at 8 p.m. is Shark Tank.
I enjoy watching the Sharks grill the hopeful entrepreneurs, and see who makes it out with a deal. But, on a recent episode, I was even more intrigued because two of the hopefuls were from a Vermont company called Liz Lovely, bakers of gluten-free and vegan cookies.
Owners and high school sweethearts Liz and Dan Holtz (aw, how cute) use 100% natural ingredients in their products, and manage to please your taste buds to the fullest extent. Their line of gluten-free cookies consists of Chocolate Fudge, German Chocolate Cake, Coconut Macaroon, Ginger Molasses, Oatmeal Raisin, Snickerdoodle, Chocolate Mint, Peanut Butter, and Chocolate Chip. If that list of flavors doesn’t make your mouth water, you’re just crazy.
After watching the Shark Tank segment and getting extremely angry at the fact that not one Shark bought in, I Googled the company. The decision had been made that I HAD to find a way to taste these gluten-free gems. I emailed Liz Lovely and promptly received a response stating “Sure, we will send you some samples. What’s your address?” SCORE!
I patiently waited for my cookies, and on the day they came in the mail, I ripped open the package in a state of pure excitement. 1) The packaging was adorable 2) The cookie bags were adorable 3) The little note included was adorable. Basically, I was in love before I even tasted the product. At the time, I was also in a rush – it was 5:10 p.m. and I was attempting to make it to a 5:30 p.m. Spinning Class. So what did I do?
Answer: I did NOT practice self control.
I opened up the Chocolate Fudge Cookie first. I was in awe of the moistness of the cookie, and I snapped a few pics for the old Instagram photo reel (follow me at @GFreeLaura), and stuffed the cookie in my mouth. As I ran upstairs to change into my workout clothes, the only thing running through my mind was the party that was happening in my mouth. Pure bliss. How did the sharks say no to this?!
I “accidentally” ate the entire cookie (which is meant to be eaten in 2 servings) and jetted off to spinning. I couldn’t wait to experience the taste of the other flavors since Chocolate Fudge blew my mind.
The next day, I gave the Snickerdoodle Cookie a go as my lunchtime treat. Once again, it was soft, moist, sugary, amazing, and hard to stop eating. I think you can even see from the picture the state of awesomeness that this company achieved.
The bliss doesn’t end there. The Ginger Molasses Cookie was the best surprise of all simply because I didn’t think I would enjoy the flavor as much as I did. It was another one of those Let me just eat half of it and I’ll save the rest for later kind of things. Clearly, that didn’t happen. I ate the entire cookie and didn’t feel guilty because when you are enjoying that good of a product, you throw calorie content and waistline management out the window…at least that’s what I like to tell myself.
The final flavor I treated myself with was Chocolate Chip. Now, you can’t really go wrong with old fashioned chocolate chip cookies, right? But, Liz Lovely didn’t just do them right, they took them to another level. The cookie had the perfect amount of chocolate chips versus dough, and each bite was a morsel of heaven.
As you can see, I enjoyed all of the cookies with each flavor holding its own in the cookie showdown. What you need to know about these cookies is that they don’t taste like they are free of anything… besides boring. I don’t know how Liz Lovely does it.
Gluten-Free. Dairy-Free. Egg-Free. 100% Natural. Zero Trans Fat & Cholesterol.
Go ahead; take another look at the pictures of the cookies. Do they look like they are missing any of those things? Nope. But, your intestines will rejoice in knowing that they are, and your taste buds will be having the time of their lives. It’s a win-win.
