I’m a big fan of Burrito bowls. Mostly, because I get to enjoy all the big bold flavors of a burrito without wasting valuable calories on a tortilla. Additionally, ditching the tortilla is a great way to make a meal that would normally be unsafe for celiacs, deliciously gluten-free.
So of course when I came across Evol’s Bowls I was eager to give them a try. Evol Bowls are all natural, gluten-free frozen entrees that are free of artificial flavors and preservatives. Since this company is best known for their amazing burritos I had high expectations. Evol’s gluten-free bowls are available in four great flavors, Chicken Enchilada, Bean & Cheese Enchilada, Fire Grilled Steak, and Teriyaki Chicken. I decided to give the Fire Grilled Steak Evol Bowl a try because of its description, “Fire-grilled steak, black beans, cilantro lime rice, roasted red and green bell peppers and cheddar cheese- All topped with an insanely tasty cilantro lime pesto.” It sounded irresistible and kind of hard to pull off.
After one bite I was extremely impressed. The thin strips of steak were amazingly tender and juicy, which was something I didn’t really expect from a frozen entree. Both the steak and the vegetables had a pleasant smoky, fire-grilled flavor that was also very enjoyable. Adding to the overall smokiness was just enough melted cheddar cheese to provide a gooey texture. All of this worked amazingly well with the cilantro lime pesto that I had to agree was “insanely tasty”. I ended up enjoying every bite of this extremely filling gluten-free bowl.
As much as I enjoyed the food I was also happy about its packaging. Evol uses 100% recyclable cardboard for their boxes. In addition, the entrée is served in compostable bowl. This adds to the convenience of the meal since you can just toss the bowl when you are done.
It is important to note that the bowls are the only gluten-free product offered by Evol. Fortunately, Evol test their finished products, including the compostable bowls, for the presence of gluten via a quantitative gluten test which must achieve results less than 20 parts per million.
