A really good frozen pizza can be hard to come by and I have to admit, when I took Schar’s Bontá d’Italia Gluten-Free Cheese Pizza out of the package, I was a bit skeptical. The crust was very thin and there didn’t seem to be much cheese on the pizza. Schar has a track record for manufacturing great-tasting gluten-free products, though, so I preheated the oven and gave it a whirl.
The directions said to let the pizza thaw for about 10 minutes, but I got a little sidetracked and let it thaw for closer to 20 minutes. I lost a bit of crust when I went to put it in the oven, most likely from leaving it out to thaw too long.
Eight short minutes later, I was pulling the pizza from the oven and was surprised to find there was definitely more cheese than there appeared to be prior to cooking. Despite some slightly burnt edges and a missing piece of the crust, I thought the pizza looked pretty good.
The pizza was a great size for two people to split, so I recruited a friend to give it a try with me. The conclusion? It’s highly comparable to the leading frozen pizzas (including those containing gluten). We both agreed that it had a nice balance of cheese, sauce and crust, and we would definitely like to try the pizza out in other varieties, too.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the way the Schar pizza turned out. Anything that tastes this good and can cook in less than 10 minutes is an A+ in my book.
