While flipping through the pages of this month’s SELF Magazine I came across a list of products for their Healthy Food Awards 2012. The products that are selected as winners of this award are low in calories, fat, sodium, and sugar and are often made with healthy and natural ingredients. In this year’s edition of the Healthy Food Awards, SELF added a new category for gluten-free products. Annie Chun’s Pad Thai Brown Rice Noodles was selected as the winner for Gluten-Free Pasta. Of course this peaked my interest so I decided to give them a try.
I found Annie Chun’s Pad Thai Brown Rice Noodle at my local Whole Foods Market. I decided to pair this new find with a very simple stir-fry that mainly consisted of a healthy mix of vegetables and a gluten-free sauce. The noodles themselves resembled slightly thin fettuccine noodles. As is common with rice noodles they cook pretty quickly. As a result they can be at risk of overcooking. However, when cooked as directed they worked perfectly with my stir-fry. The noodles have a very mild, almost neutral taste that picks up the flavor from the sauce they are served with making them very versatile. The slippery and slightly chewy texture was also pleasant.In addition to being gluten-free noodles that taste great, I also appreciate that they are made using natural whole grain brown rice, which is always a plus in my book. Between the taste, texture and versatility Annie Chun’s Pad Thai Brown Rice Noodle is a welcome addition to any noodle dish.
