Gluten-free Confections

Have you heard of Sweet Christine’s? I have, many times. Not only from members of the celiac and gluten-free community, but from colleagues at the Nation Foundation for Celiac Awareness(NFCA). Sweet Christine’s is even a member of the NFCA GREAT Business Association. Though I had heard and seen so much about them I had not had the opportunity to sample any of their products. Well I’m happy to say this week that changed. Sweet Christine sent me a generous package of their products to sample for review. The package included a loaf of their sliced sandwich bread, a bag of hamburger rolls, a package of doughnuts, and a lava cake.

Sweet Christine’s Sandwich Bread:

breadStraight out of the package I was impressed by the look and texture of this pre-sliced sandwich bread. When I removed a slice from the bag I found it to be fresh, moist, and very far from crumbly. I tasted the bread both fresh out of the package and toasted. Since I am a huge fan of whole grain “tree bark” breads, this bread was a bit on the sweet side for me. Lightly toasted it reminded me of French toast, which I think it would be perfect for. It would also make a great kids lunch bread, or perfect for an adult who prefers their bread on the sweet side. Even though it was not my favorite, it truly is impressive and worth a try.

Sweet Christine’s Hamburger Rolls:

Hamburger rolls are truly a unique item in the gluten-free world. Though this is slowly changing, it is still quite impressive to see someone make this product successfully. Much like the bread, the Hamburger Rolls are moist and sweet. However, where the bread was light and fluffy, the rolls are dense. The sweet flavor and moist texture reminded me of the potato rolls I get for the kids when they have hot dogs. These buns can defiantly hold up to the job of a hamburger bun especially when lightly toasted.

Sweet Christine’s Doughnuts:

Sweet Christine’s delivers yet another impressive and unique item. I received these doughnuts in a six pack, half chocolate frosted and half vanilla frosted. I liked that inside the package, each doughnut was individually wrapped. The taste and texture of this product was similar to a very moist cake, or a very fluffy pastry. They were very moist, pleasantly sweet, and topped with a thin layer of delicious and very complementary frosting.

Sweet Christine’s Lava Cake:

lavacakeThis product is exactly as it should be. It has everything you would expect from a lava cake. A smooth chocolaty cake that is not overly sweet filled with delicious molten syrup. Though each cake is small, it is very filling, making it perfect for sharing.
